Dakshineswar Kali Temple, Kolkata, India

Description

Bhavatarini is the deity honoured at this temple. An aspect of Kali, the name means 'she who liberates her devotees from the ocean of existence', or Saṃsāra. This is not as morbid as it sounds. Saṃsāra is a Sanskrit word that means 'wandering' but in this case more likely refers to the cyclcal nature of life-death-rebirth. The temple was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali. The temple is famous for its association with Ramakrishna, a mystic of 19th Century Bengal.
